Welcome to Syn3 research group

We are here to clarify the motility and origin of life on Earth using JCVI-syn3 and Mycoplasma.
In the laboratory, we use genetic manipulation, optical microscopy, electron microscopy, biophysics, biochemistry, computer calculations, and other techniques.
Here is a "paradise of exploding cutting-edge biology".
The goal of each student is to become a person who contributes to humanity by studying the "ability to clarify the truth".
Some hardship and sacrifice are required, but nothing compared to the joy of climbing one step higher.

Laboratory life

When you become a member of our group, understand that humanity expects us and invest enormous resources in us. We will meet those expectations.
Study, discuss, and think profoundly, then we decide on a research theme and content.
Conversation in the laboratory is in English.
We devote ourselves to experiment, discussion and practice, and we present our results at conferences.
When the results and discussions are satisfactory, they are submitted to an English-language journal. Submitted papers are anonymously reviewed by two or three examiners (peer review). Journals have ranks, and if your paper is published in Nature or Science, you will be "applauded" and get a scholarship and a career, and our laboratory will get a large research grant. To confront absurdity that we sometimes face during the paper review process, all lab members perform a special dance (acceptance dance) for acceptance of the paper.

In addition to English-language papers, you are encouraged to use Japanese materials, YouTube, Wikipedia, PubMed, iBiology, X, Google translater, DeepL, chatGPT for your studies.

To be a laboratory member

Since I, Miyata, will retire in March 2026, it is difficult to accept new students. However, even after the retirement I will continue my current study, which is three themes of research using minimal synthetic bacteria. Especially I would like to establish the fields, (2) the origin of the motility of life on Earth, and (3) the boundary between life and death of cells. I am now "planning" the methods.
If you are interested in our laboratory, please e-mail to me (miyata@omu.ac.jp).

Economic conditions

All expenses necessary for research, such as joint research and participation in academic conferences, are paid from research funds. OMU has many support systems. Of course, as with other universities, support from the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) is also available. Many of the alumni have been selected as JSPS research fellows.
The living environment in Sugimoto-cho is one of the best in the world. It is within walking distance from two stations, especially from Sugimoto-cho station, which is a "30 second walk" to the campus. Many stores and restaurants are open until late at night. There are no dangerous areas. Because of the low population, you can find reasonably priced apartments (about 25,000 yen ~).

Career

A lot of our alumni successfully work on academic area and industries. We also keep in touch with each other.
