Faculty of Science

<To students who wish to enter the Graduate School of Science, Osaka City University>

What is the definition of science?

Science is dedicated to important basic studies of nature to explore the structure of materials that construct the universe, formations of life, and so on. It is said that the theories and principles of natural science supported the progress of technology in the latter half of the 20th century, in particular. However, the history of natural science as a field of study is much shorter than the history of humankind. In other words, humankind has not yet understood nature except a small part of it. We can say that natural science is a field of study that attracts humans and has a wonderful possibility of making progress continuously. The study of science is a dialog between humans and nature and a challenge to the unknown. Furthermore, it is interesting to study science, which nurtures the dreams and hopes of humans and opens the door for the next generation.

The Faculty of Science was established as a department of the Faculty of Science and Engineering in 1949, and it became independent in 1959. From the beginning, the Faculty of Science made it its mission to play an important role in the development of natural science at top international level. Osaka City University is also known as the first Japanese university that founded a graduate school. It has been sending out a large number of excellent researchers and engineers who did top-level researches under the supervision of some of the most prestigious professors in Japan under the free academic tradition of the urban-type university. Numbers of graduates are playing an active part in each area of wide research and industrial fields.

Graduate School of Science

<Introduction of Graduate School of Science>

Graduate School of Science gives cutting-edge themes to students who work hard night and day with laboratory researchers to solve the mysteries of nature. Teachers and students tackle the unknown on an equal footing. When students find facts after difficulties and move a step forward toward truth, they will be able to feel excitement that they can only experience in science researches.

<Graduate School of Science has been innovated.>

Graduate School of Science was reorganized in April 1998 in response to the change of today's cutting-edge fields of study and in the aim of contributing widely to the society of the 21st century. Consequently, five majors, i.e., mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and geology, were integrated into three domains, i.e., the departments of mathematics and physics, molecular materials science, and biology and geosciences. The interdisciplinary fields of mathematical science, advanced material science, and environmental science have been prepared as well since then.

Furthermore, a grade-skipping system is available, which enables third-year students with outstanding academic results to enter the first half of the doctoral course. Graduate students with outstanding research results can shorten their enrollment-in-school period (i.e., a standard period of three years) of the second half of the doctoral course by one or two years as well. Moreover, Graduate School accepts a variety of talented human resources through member-of-society entrance examinations and recommendation entrance examinations.

<Courses after Graduate School>

Graduate School of Science at Osaka City University is one of Japan's graduate courses that were founded earliest in Japan. Graduate School of Science has been sending out numbers of talented human resources with outstanding achievements, broad views, and research capabilities that can be handed down to the next generation. Over 200 students received doctor's degrees within the last 10 years, and 40 percent of them are playing an active part as university teachers and researchers throughout Japan. By taking the number of graduates playing an active part as researchers at public research institutes, high school teachers, and technical college teachers into calculation, over 60 percent of those who graduated have been engaged in research and education-related activities. There are numbers of graduates who play an active part in private enterprises as well, and their capabilities are highly evaluated.
