Instructions for Graduate School Application
and Selection Method
for International Students
1. Applicant Qualifications (must meet one of the following
qualifications listed below)
1) Master's Program
1. One who has completed
16 years of education abroad and has or will have graduated an undergraduate
program before entering the Master's Program of the Osaka City
University.
2. One who has completed 15 years of education
abroad or while residing in Japan has completed a correspondence course given by an
institution abroad and has completed 15 years of education. In either case, the
applicant must be approved by the Graduate School of Science of the Osaka City
University as one that has earned the necessary credits with outstanding
grades.
3. One who has been
approved by the Graduate School of Science of the Osaka City University through
an individual entrance screening as one with scholastic abilities equivalent to
or greater than that of a college graduate and who is at least 22 years of
age.
4. Those applying as an
Embassy Recommended Monbukagakusho Scholarship Student must be considered in the
categories 1.-3. listed above and must also have passed the preliminary
selection by a Japanese Embassy/Consulate General.
2) Doctoral Program
1. One who has one of the
following: a Master's Degree; a Professional Degree; or a degree equivalent to
either degree previously mentioned.
2. One who has completed
16 years of education abroad or a correspondence course given by an institution
abroad and has or will have partaken in research for at least 2 years at a
university or research center in or outside of Japan before entering the
Doctoral program of the Osaka City University. This individual must also be
approved by the Graduate School of Science of the Osaka City University through
an individual entrance screening as one with scholastic abilities equivalent to
or greater than that of one holding a Master's Degree or a Professional
Degree.
3. One who has been
approved by the Graduate School of Science of the Osaka City University as
having scholastic abilities equivalent to or greater than that of one holding a
Master's Degree or of a Professional Degree and is at least 24 years of
age.
4. Those applying as an
Embassy Recommended Monbukagakusho Scholarship Student must be considered in the
categories 1.-3. listed above and also must have passed the preliminary
selection by a Japanese Embassy/Consulate General.
2. Preliminary consultation and Applicant Qualifications
Approval
1) Please make contact
with a potential supervising professor and obtain his or her approval before
submitting an application.
2) The applicant who must be approved by the Graduate School of Science of the Osaka City
University as one that has earned the necessary credits with outstanding grades,
need to submit the application form for applicant qualifications approval.
3. Application Documents
1) Application Form of Graduate School of Science of
the Osaka City University.
2) Acquirement Certificate of Japanese Language: Certificate that
Japanese have been mastered in school to the extent
permissible.
3) Certificate ofregistered items in the Foreign
Resident Registration (toroku genpyo kisai jiko shomeisho): Certificate issued
by the mayor of your residence city. Please submit a copy of your visa, if you
have not completed the Foreign Resident Registration.
4) Certificate of Applicant Qualifications from
the Graduate School of Science of the Osaka City University (If you have been
approved by the Graduate School of Science of the Osaka City
University).
5) Curriculum Vitae: Please write on the prescribed form of Osaka
City University by yourself.
6) Original Transcripts and Statement of Completion (or Graduating)
of all colleges, universities, and graduate schools.
7) Tightly sealed Recommendation Lettersfrom supervisors who are familiar with the applicant's academic or scientific
work.
8) Statement of Purpose and Summary (ca. 2000
letters, A4 size paper) of Master's program and Master's thesis (In case of
applicant for Doctoral program).
NOTE:
Applicant must pay the Examination Fee (30,000 JPY) by the postal
money transfers from Japanese Postal Office (Monbukagakusho Scholarship Students
are exempted from paying the Examination Fee.).
All the documents must be written in English or Japanese, or
translations in either of these languages should be attached. The translated
documents must be approved by public organizations.
4. Selection Method
The enrollees to the graduate School of Science of the Osaka City
University are selected with the result of achievement test and the substance of
the application documents. The venue of entrance examination is in the Sugimoto
Campus, Osaka City University.
1) Entrance Examination on Master's Program (Early September and
Middle February)
Written Examination: English and Specialized Subject (the applicant using English as
native language may be set another examination) .
Oral Examination: Specialized Subject and acquisition on the Japanese
language.
2) Entrance Examination on Doctoral Program (Middle February for April start, and Early
September for October start)
<Mathematics & Physics Course>
Written Examination: English and Specialized Subject (the applicant using English as
native language may be set another examination) .
Oral Examination: Specialized Subject and acquisition on the Japanese
language.
<Molecular Materials Science Course>
Oral Examination: Specialized Subject and Oral Presentation of the applicant's
study.
<Biology & Geosciences Course>
Written Examination: English and Specialized Subject (the applicant using English as
native language may be set another examination) .
Oral Examination: Specialized Subject and acquisition on the Japanese
language.
5. Announcement of Application Results
The application results
will be announced by the office of Graduate school of Science about two weeks
after the examination. The successful applicant will receive a letter of
acceptance and the school registration documents from the
office.
6. School Expenses
Admission Fee: 342,000 JPY
Annual Tuition Fee: 535,800 JPY per year
