Osaka City Univ. especially faculty of Science is standing just in front of JR-Sugimoto-Chou of Hanwa Line. But note that neither express nor rapid survice will stop at this local station.
No matter which direction you come from, you have to make connection at Tennoji Terminal.
First of all, you must go to JR Osaka Terminal by Tokaido-Line "Shin-kai-soku" the rapid service. It will take about 23 minutes and need no extra charges. You may not use Shinkansen Super Express from Kyoto to Shin Osaka, to cut out unnecessary spendings !!
Remember, the Osaka Terminal is one of the most largest transport terminal in Japan. You may choose several ways to arrive Osaka City Univ. The symplest way is taking "Osaka Loop Line". Either Clockwise and CounterClockwise direction in Loop Line will take you to Tennohji Terminal in the same time, 20 minutes, because Tennohji is just opposite side of the Osaka Loop Line. The fastest way is taking "Yamatoji kai-soku" the rapid service, and it will take only 12 minutes without any extra charges.
BTW: You will find three "UMEDA" station very close to the Osaka Teminal. These are two private lines station ("Hanshin" and "Hankyu" lines) and one Osaka City Subway line terminal. "UMEDA" is a general geographic name arround the Osaka Terminal.
There are several ways to come to Osaka City Univ. The fastest way is taking "Haruka" the Airport Express. It takes only 50 minutes, but the extra charge is needed. You can also take "Kanku-Kaisoku" the rapid survice, it will take about 70 minutes. Make sure, both "Haruka" and "Kanku-Kaisoku" does not stop at Sugimoto-chou station. You need to make a connection at Tennoji Terminal, and take the local Hanwa Line.
