| Abstract |
Representation theory is a powerful tool. Often one can translate difficult questions (e.g. studying actions of Lie groups of manifolds or understanding rational points on elliptic curves) into
questions in representation theory, where one has many techniques at one's disposal. My talk will focus on modular representation theory. This is a beautiful theory with many unsolved problems.
I will explain the basics of Lusztig's conjecture on the simple characters of finite groups of Lie type, and state recent work giving counter-examples for many "small" prime numbers. I will not assume
any background in representation theory or algebraic geometry.
